The US has literally always been a difficult place. It's always been cruel and violent, people just didn't see it because they were on drugs, if you consider the american dream a drug to distract people from the reality they're in. It's just that the american dream is falling apart rapidly, and it's cold turkey, and the people feel the suffering that they've been in for decades. Just now they feel it, too.

The hyper prosperity of the post WW2 America begs to differ. Sure, the non-white perspective is a valid argument but the slow march of progress did begin in the 50s.
