The Name of the Rose 1986

Sean Connery delivers a great performance as an intellectual friar investigating a series of unexplainable deaths at a remote abbey. With the assistance of his young apprentice, Christian Slatter, the two navigate the secret and decisive world of the Church in 14th century Europe.

I haven't seen that since in played in cinemas, but I remember it being a rather good and thoughtful for a mass-market film. Since it is no longer fresh in my mind, might yuo compare it to Conclave or some other film?

Conclave is much more ... polished. The Name of the Rose is dark, visually and topically, and seldom was a line included to induce a laugh. I'd say it's closer to The Rosary Murders, albeit a much better film.
