The Offspring are a band who gained popularity in the mid-1990s with a song about gang violence that said โ€œYou gotta keep em separated.โ€ Dexter Holland is the lead singer.

He was in school as a molecular biologist when he was first in the Offspring. He was going to get a PhD but the Offspring became too popular.

He actually went back to school and got his PhD later, in 2017.

Relatedly, Brian May, the guitarist of Queen, has an PhD in astrophysics and his song โ€˜39 is about the effects of special relativity.

Sorry for all the text, this is one of my special interests I guess. Edited for possibly improved clarity.
