It's pretty fair really.

The elves with their history steeped in myth and legend would obviously believe that the ring - being forged in the fires of Mount Doom - was indestructible through any conventional means.

You could quite easily imagine the elves would be so utterly convinced by this fact that they'd never even consider actually checking whether it was true or not.

Blind faith in what you believe to be true can sometimes be a thought trap, and empiricism is what really counts.

So yeah, give that lil' fucker a whack, just to be sure.
