IMO this was peak consumerism. They literally wanted to give you more so you chose them instead of trying to trick you.

The games weren’t that great, but they were based on solid game mechanics (cause it was old board games), just a little bit of extra fun for those who wanted to try it.

The copy of Roller Coaster tycoon I played as a kid literally came out of one of those boxes, there were some legit great ones on offer.

What do you mean "weren't that great"? I got the Star Wars : Pod Racer demo in a cereal box and that was a peak gaming experience for 6-yo me
