Is there another book for source material? I thought S1 was the entire book

There is a whole series in different time periods with the same family dynasty. There is already a tv show in the 80s with pierce brosnan for one set in modern times in Hong Kong. I haven’t read them, so I’m not sure how much they are linked.

Some are loosely linked, some more closely.

Tai-Pan, Noble House and Gai-Jin are all about the Struan Clan in different time periods

A descendent from one of the main characters in Shogun appears in Noble House, the main character and the authors alter ego in Rat King appears in Noble House, too. And one of the side characters in Noble House as a prominent role in Whirlwind.

I really hoped they would give Clavells whole Asian Saga the treatment they gave Shogun. But it looks like they are just doing another season with no connections to the books.

The future seasons won't be about Tai-Pan and Noble House as those are thinly related at best and more as a wink and nod from James Clavell. I really hope they get adapted though because those two books are my favorites from Clavell. However Shogun is historical fiction so they can just pick up with these characters where they left off in future seasons.

This being an adaptation from one of my favorite authors doing another season is more of a red flag than a welcome announcement to me just because there have been so many writers lately that either disregard the original writing or think they can just step in and write more stories like the original author did. You can look at Game of Thrones for the most prominent example of this. A more similar example to Shogun would be The Terror which was written by another one of my favorite authors, Dan Simmons. They changed a lot in the adaptation of the book and I wasn't a fan. They then went on and made the show an anthology series for some reason? I really hope the showrunners here aren't planning on doing that.
