This is a key reason behind my discomfort with social media. The algorithms that seem unresponsive to clear signals of intent was the last straw. Ended up leaving YouTube over the incessant push to new channels and ragebait shit.

Anyway, lemmy might be a cesspit at times, but its a cesspit I can choose/not choose, to engage with, and thats some nice anti-monopolisation of my online experience in the design.

Aren’t communities/sub-reddits just another version of curated lists organized by topic?

Ah, so a meta list with locations of communities/subreddits/forums/etc that is platform agnostic. I see.

Yes, I was thinking something YouTube (or long-form media) specific with the purpose of replacing the YouTube algorithm. So for example maybe someone who loves astronomy puts together a playlist about supernovas that include a video from pbs spacetime, Sabine Hossenfelder and kursgesagt. Then he puts together other playlists. Over time you’d recognize this curator’s name and trust them not to point you to garbage.
