Refraining from all evil, not clinging to birth and death, working in deep compassion for all sentient beings, respecting those over you and having pity for those below you, without any detesting or desiring, worrying or lamentation—this is what is called Buddha. Do not search beyond it. “

Although Shikantaza is the pivot of Dogen’s practice, he still emphasized the importance of keeping the bodhisattva precepts (and the monastic rules of course) Also in the Maka Hannya Haramitsu, he said that keeping the precepts, reciting sutras, prostration etc. all are prajna
