Rules:
1. Be civil
Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.
2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.
Obvious right or left wing sources will be removed at the mods discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted seperately but not to the post body.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source.
Posts which titles don’t match the source won’t be removed, but the autoMod will notify you, and if your title misrepresents the original article, the post will be deleted. If the site changed their headline, the bot might still contact you, just ignore it, we won’t delete your post.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials or celebrity gossip is allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
7. No duplicate posts.
If a source you used was already posted by someone else, the autoMod will leave a message. Please remove your post if the autoMod is correct. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners.
The auto mod will contact you if a link shortener is detected, please delete your post if they are right.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

I really support this. We lost the reins when we checked out of our local communities and stopped looking at our local council leaders, judges, sheriffs and of course mayors and governors with the same scrutiny as we fixed on the annual 4-year WWE EXTREME federal election spectacle.
If we held them to the same standards and created a foundation of people who actually represent us, it would be far, far harder for the higher elected officials to walk all over us. And it's far easier to actually make changes to your community, it's actually doable to recall people in power in your state! Many state congress people often run uncontested as well, and if we paid attention to these situations we could mount opposition or even oppose them ourselves.
The thing that worries me is that so many are so cynical that they can't feel engaged with the often boring and even cringey state of local politics, and will invent reasons in their head to avoid involvement because it feels far, far less rewarding than complaining on the internet to people who will give you upvotes. I feel like this goes hand-in-hand with the social isolation that we've allowed to fester on both sides.
I really have to thank my wife as it's been a recent change for me, I was pretty isolationist. She's been a "townie" all her life and since moving in almost 8 years ago, I've started to really see the benefits of community, like farmers markets and such.
I think the best thing for people is to get active in their local community and politics. My brother was pretty conservative going back a long while; mainly about wanting lower or no taxes. He then ran for and won his HOA presidency and quickly realized how fucked they would be if they just got rid of their HoA fees. They needed to dredge their lake but the previous administration signed in a bilaw stating they couldn't raise the fees. They didn't have the money for it outright, nor could they pay back a loan. He didn't run again, but I'd like to think he learn a valuable lesson about public service that day, and the effort it takes to run a community.
So I've been protesting any company that's publicly traded. Had the same cell phone since 2019. Moving funds into a credit union. Cooking meals at home. On the rare occasion we eat out it's at a locally owned restaurant. Buying our produce at the farmers market and growing some of our own. For the stuff we can't avoid, getting bulk items from Costco until we can source better AND local. And then socials, getting rid of all the major ones and switching to the fediverse.
