This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

TL;DR: A former PlayStation developer revealed that FromSoftware has rejected up to 10 studios proposing a Bloodborne remake, indicating the studio's cautious approach to revisiting the popular game despite high demand from fans and developers. This highlights FromSoftware's control over its IP and quality standards.

Despite Sony owning the rights to Bloodborne, and could have technically gone ahead with a remake without Miyazaki's involvement, Sony decided to shelve the idea until FromSoftware is ready. Now, Brandon Sheffield has posted on BlueSky with insider details, such as FromSoftware receiving more than 10 pitches for a Bloodborne remake, sequel, or spinoff, which were all rejected.

These comments from Sheffield, who has worked with Sony on releases for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation mobile, back up previous reporting that Miyazaki really wanted Bloodborne handled by FromSoftware. In 2024, Miyazaki said the team does want to return to Bloodborne, which suggests, at least to me, that we have everything we need for a Bloodborne remake, except time.

Again, no surprises here. Makes sense that a lot of companies see the potential of a follow-up and want to capitalise on it. Good on FS for standing their ground and for Sony to not fuck them over over money

I agree, but there's degrees to it. Sometimes it's done to update an old game, but I feel like a lot of remasters and re-releases are done just to milk an already successful existing IP rather than try to build on it. Skyrim wasn't old, it didn't need fifteen releases. Overwatch getting shut down in favour of Overwatch 2, only to then become Overwatch again is ridiculous.

Then there's stuff like Raidou being remastered. It's relatively obscure and was only ever available for the PS2. I don't mind that type of thing as much.

The Last of Us being remastered twice is a fun topic of discussion. Almost as if the developers knew that they can only go downhill from there.
