interesting, had to look it up and you are half correct.

it still is officially the DoD, although there was an executive order stating it can legally be referenced as the DoW too

The executive has no actual authority to change the name of a department. So I am fully correct.

you are half correct because department of war is now the legal name the department of defense can also go by

The President can issue rules, regulations, and instructions (called executive orders), which have the binding force of law upon federal agencies but do not require approval of the United States Congress. Executive orders are subject to judicial review and interpretation.
