Explanation: The city-states of medieval Italy were... very prickly, and prone to starting trouble with each other over the most inane and minor things, all of them looking for any excuse to attack when a traditional rival was, or seemed, weak. One notable war started because some peasant stole a fucking bucket - at least according to popular legend!
