this myth with the radiation seems to be very enduring. it comes up on literally every discussion about mars settlement, even though it's not true. idk what to do about this, probably NASA will give out a statement in 5 years and declare that radiation is not actually that big an issue and then people will stop complaining about it.

This is based on data collected by Curiosity. This value was confirmed by a more recently published study:

1 Sievert (Sv) is 20x the DOE annual radiation limit for workers (5 rem), and 10x the average dose received on an ISS mission (10 rem). It's also about 20% of a lethal dose (~500 rem).

This information was super easy to find. It's not a myth, and the health risks are currently considered too high for human exploration of Mars.
i was referring to this NASA webpage: https://science.nasa.gov/resource/radiation-measurements-on-mars/
where it says that average radiation intensity is around 200 μGy/day which is about 73 mGy/year (365 days).
and this XKCD radiation dose chart: https://xkcd.com/radiation/
where it says "maximum dose permitted by US radiation workers: 50 mSv/year" and "lowest dose clearly linked to increased cancer risk: 100 mSv/year" so yeah we're right in the middle between these two. still, i'm not sure by how much the risk is increased but i assume it means "above detectable threshhold" which i assume is still pretty small. so i don't think that radiation alone will stop people from taking the risk and going there. contrary to what the newspapers present. europeans first going to america didn't face a no-risk journey either and they were still willing to go.
