The expectation is you shower every day. The assumption is if you did not shower that day, you stink.
It was an easy way to get downvotes on reddit: just say I shower ever 3-5 days and don't stink and people would just assume I did stink and that it is impossible for the human body not to sink without a daily shower.
Sometimes I'd even experiment and say I wash my pits daily and use a bidet. That helped a little, but not a lot. It has to be full body immersion in a shower, or it is ineffective according to the common wisdom.
Edit: i see it's not limited to reddit lol
People really need to learn that everyone's bodies are different. Personally, I've found that buzzing off body hair does wonders for the perception of my cleanliness. Doesn't matter how much I scrub, the smell sticks to the hair. When it's not ungodly hot out, I could (and had to one extremely busy work week) go almost a week without showering.
If I shower because I've been sweating, it's because I itch; I don't smell worse for sweating--at least not if I'm using deoderant.
I get it, I have a buddy who doesn't need deodorant because he just doesn't smell, even when doing manual labor. He still showers regularly, but not every day, to get the sweat and dirt off. I knew him for years before he told me and didn't suspect a thing.
Maybe he kept it to himself because people react with disgust despite all the evidence before their very noses.
Cleanliness as ritual.
It is also stupid, since you can very easily just wipe your skin with a washcloth and use a bidet, or something. Unless you are sweating like a crazy and covered in dirt, it is not that hard to clean yourself, without taking a shower, or full-body-underwater-bath. Just a bucket of water is a lot. "Aah oh noo evryone needs to shower thrice a day!!" no you do not - you need to stay clean. Taking a shower specifically, is a luxury.
Yes, it is incredibly stupid.
"You didn't take a shower? Your arm pits must STINK!"
"That's DISGUSTING. You must stink."
"I'm sure people are just too polite to tell you."
etc.
