To be clear, science settled that like 5 years ago, the politicians just finally admitted they did nothing and were all out of ideas so yes, the sky is blue and man-made global warming is going to have ugly consequences. Yes, uglier than we've already experienced. May the odds be ever in your favour.
Yep, even if we (humans) started doing everything right today, we'll still be deteriorating for years. That is my very limited understanding.
Canadians might not lead the way on deaths by starvation in the coming years, but we are all on this ball together. It is our duty to act to prevent this disaster, and as a relatively young and relatively wealthy nation I would say our proportion of that duty should be greater than simply our percentage of causing it.
I don't know that we should feel like it's our duty to take a bigger share. That doesn't mean we shouldn't take responsibility for doing so anyway. The difference there is subtle, but I think it's a bit like the duty of care a doctor has for an injured patient. We're not at fault for the injury, but we choose to take responsibility for making the patient whole to the best of our ability. Taking responsibility doesn't mean taking more than our share of accountability. Stepping up because someone has to, and we can, is about doing the right thing because we care about the dignity of our cousins everywhere, and we care about seeing the right thing done whether or not we owe it to anyone.
That's what it means to be Canadian. We're not polite because we have to be or because we owe people something. We're polite because we believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity until proven otherwise, and we choose every day to be responsible for making that happen. That's the Canadian spirit.
