Chronic Illness
A community/support group for chronically ill people. While anyone is welcome, our number one priority is keeping this a safe space for chronically ill people.
This is a support group, not a place for healthy people to share their opinions on disability.

Absolutely no ableism. This includes harmful stereotypes: lazy/freeloaders etc
-
No quackery. Does an up-to date major review in a big journal or a major government guideline come to the conclusion you’re claiming is fact? No? Then don’t claim it’s fact. This applies to potential treatments and disease mechanisms.
-
No denialism or minimisation This applies challenges faced by chronically ill people.
-
No psychosomatising psychosomatisation is a tool used by insurance companies and governments to blame physical illnesses on mental problems, and thereby saving money by not paying benefits. There is no concrete proof psychosomatic or functional disease exists with the vast majority of historical diagnoses turning out to be biomedical illnesses medicine has not discovered yet. Psychosomatics is rooted in misogyny, and consisted up until very recently of blaming women’s health complaints on “hysteria”.
-
Respect the Group’s Purpose. It’s a support forum for people with chronic illness to vent and share and talk together. It’s not a place for healthy people to come and give their opinions.

I'm sorry that happened to you. Hope you can get refund or atleast replace the food.
I sometimes get substitutions but most are close enough. For a laugh a few years ago I heard of a woman who ordered a box of tampons... Supposedly the store was out of the ones she ordered(this was mid pandemic). They substituted it with a snickers candy bar 🤣
Thanks :) yeah I got a refund for the non-supplied items. It was more like the store didn't have stock at the time my order was packed. Still sucks though.
I wonder if they just can't be bothered fully completing my order sometimes. Often if a family member goes in person afterwards, there's stock on the shelf. Can't claim to know how Coles operates behind the scenes though.
And yeah sometimes substitutes are really bad… like hotdog buns instead of wholemeal bread, or Coke instead of coconut water. I often disable substitutions when I'm burned on a item-by-item basis.
Back before COVID I went carless and just ordered grocery delivery and had similar poor experiences. One time the packer marked milk and all other brands as unavailable. I was fueled by pure spite when I caught a ride to the same store to take pictures of the very stocked refrigerators with their copious amounts of milk.. And finished my own damn shopping.
Yeah it seems to happen quite often…
I looked into it a bit. ABC did a documentary on this, and found that at least Coles have very strict time limits and schedules for packing online deliveries. They're timed while gathering items for orders and have "pick-rate targets"; for example 200 items per hour (3 per minute). So if you order, say, 6 things that are across the store from each other, they might decide that walking across the entire store multiple times would hurt their numbers too much. So, to avoid punishment, they just mark it as unavailable, send it off incomplete, and move on to the next order.
No idea if this applies to other stores, but it sounds hellish enough that I'd believe it in 2026. Somehow they designed a system where literally everyone suffers. I feel like I can't really blame the picker for working within the bounds of a system like that.
I live in an populous area, I have 6 grocery stores within 3 miles off the top of my head(walmart, target, Tom thumb, krogers, whole foods, heb) that probably helps. Typically I do delivery through doordash and can specify what is acceptable substitions and what is not and should just be refunded. My main issue is drivers can always find my apartment complex but can't find my specific building. That's mostly due to the building numbers having no logical sense in ordering at this complex though.
Man I would love to be able to specify specific substitutions. That sounds so good.
I usually use the official Coles app for delivery because they have refrigerated trucks. I've had bad experiences in the past where e.g. uber delivery does my order last; by then the dairy and frozen foods have been out of the fridge for 2 hours. The nearest shopping centre is a bit over 6km away (3.7 miles) so it gets a bit awkward sometimes. Feels like managing groceries and medications is a full time stocktake job.
It comes in handy, for example I like mini apple stroudle and berry stroudle is ok but I don't like for the cherry ones. I can specify buy Apple, if sold out buy berry, otherwise refund. It also let's me specify like buy a gallon of milk, if unavailable buy 2 half gallons.
For an additional fee I can request "direct to me" so I'm the only or atleast first delivery for that driver, typically it's like $2.99.
I'm lucky I don't have a physical chronic illness(only mental) but my kid has multiple physical illness so having to include him with groceries would be an ordeal. I get you with medication though, he takes 4 in morning, 1 in afternoon, 5 in evening and 1 at night. Yeah... Practically a full time Job
