For me it was learning that white settlers originally came to texas because the Mexican government wanted them to cull the native American population, then succeeded from Mexico because they were going to take away their slaves. Definitely didn't scratch that surface in grade school.
The slavery stuff was so important that the Texans wrote it into their very first constitution. Which is now proudly on display at the state museum in Austin.
Argh the civil war was about states’ rights not slavery.
I wish that didn’t require a snarkmark.
Yeah, we certainly weren’t taught that in Texas History either.
