IIRC the first manga I read was Berserk and it was because the anime (the 90s one) ended right at the point in the story where it is fully established why the main character is so angry and wants revenge so bad

Haha, I'm not sure how much getting into the manga helped in that case. Not sure well ever get a real ending to that story.
