I think it's more there are multiple rentiers in a cashless society. Pretty sure every credit card transaction has two additional entities getting a cut (since the machines aren't always by the CC company), and debit card ones have up to three additional now (bank, visa/mastercard, again potentially whoever makes the machine).
Theoretically, digital cash won't have that problem. Although there will be the major problem of surveillance and privacy.
