The idea that the Lathe of Heaven being an electronic lathe instead of an old school one makes this funnier

It's like picturing "the oven of heaven" and it's an EZ Bake.

Is an old school lathe in this context hand cranked?

The Lathe of Heaven (1971)'s title is a reference to a Chinese philosopher from the 4th century BCE

So I've always pictured a manual lathe

i was actually thinking foot-cranked - i feel like some oldschool lathes, pottery wheels and such have a foot pedal to control/power the rotation so that you can freely use both hands
