Really needs some context. Here is a picture of Lewis Hamilton shaking hands with Vlad, is Mr Father-in-law doing necessary pleasantries or celebrating the sale of orphan meat?

That's a completely different handshake, though. Hamilton won the race one Russia, but his handshake still has Putin reaching out at a distance. The OP handshake stops just short of Putin putting his arm around him - they're much closer together, much more trusting.

Also both of these pictures are from many Yeats ago.
