Folks in anime seem to reproduce in much the same way. Also, how weird did they think we thought alpaca sex was? It seems pretty basic to me, male jumps on female's back and they make a baby. I think the author is projecting, no one thinks about alpaca sex sir, you should talk to someone.
They might have thought swapping fluid was spitting in each others mouths
