Don't we have 1010 fingers though, 101 on each hand?
We taught our daughter to count starting at zero. Her kindergarten teacher was not amused.
Counting starts at one, indexing starts at zero.
I didn't want to spoil their fun, but I'm glad you did. That kid's going to experience an embarassing moment of parental disillusionment the first time they try to be clever with a halfway competent math teacher.

Eight fingers and two thumbs for ten digits.
I just realised that digits translates to Finger in german. And finger also translates to Finger. But you have 10 of the former and 8 of the latter. Funny.
It's as if people used their fingers when starting counting things... How weird
