It wasn’t until about 100 years into Christianity that he became god. He only ever claimed to be the messiah.

Biblical Jesus only, and he twisted it out of other people. Hence the need for a Christ Confessor. It was pretty cool when John recast Peter as Mary. Guess John was being woke.
It's a bit like Smithers on the Simpsons. Once they just have him say he is gay it stops being funny. Hinting at it in various creative ways is the funny part. So when the various Roman Empire publishing houses were churning out Jesus content they made sure that he didn't call himself the Messiah or God since that breaks the drama. Have other people in the story do it. And do it after he does magic tricks.
