Yeah, sounds like it split into (at least) 2 pieces. What they found is large enough to conclusively identify it as the wreckage. Other details about timing, recovery and an exact cause were not yet available.

It must've popped when coms went out. The field was so far apart that means it was high up in the water column

God, there must have been snapped fibers and/or microfractures all over the pressure vessel every time that thing went down, and it finally gave.
