General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

I mean... The UK wants more nurses and care workers right? Why would it say no?

Because it's toxic for the type of brexiteers who objected to the EU because it meant there were more foreigners in the country. Even "worse", these people will mostly be visible minorities.

This is a crucial constituency for the Conservative party.

This is a crucial constituency for the Conservative party.

Exactly. And let's not also forget the Labour majority in the red wall that voted for Brexit. Equally abhorrent.

Because Brexiters are irrational. I'm tired of pretending otherwise.

I would much rather have relied on the workforce of the EU than selling our country off to the lowest common denominator.

That's pretty racist my friend. Why is your assumption that Indians are, in your words, the "lowest common denominator"?

That's a pretty outdated way to think.

Err, sorry what does GDP per capita have to do with skilled nurses and care workers? As long as they are skilled who cares where they come from. Would you refuse to be treated by an Indian nurse because he or she came from a country whose GDP per capita was lower than a French one? Grow up.

You have to do better than to pretend your comment is anything other than racist. Fucking hell this sort of thinking is still popular these days. Disgusting.

Coming from the most racist country in the world this is brilliant.

India has issues I would rather not deal with until they can change. The education system is not good for everyone, it is good for the privileged few. Corruption is rife across the country. So no it is **NOT **racism, it is statement of fact. India is a very poor nation in terms of GDP. There are consequences to that.

You'd rather rely on the economic group you exited than the country you colonized?

[–] Syldon@feddit.uk 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I would rather work with the countries I know rather than one I don't. I won't dragged down that route. Try someone else.

Er yeah, I said that. You want me to type it more slowly for you?

Why does India want this? Surely skilled workers leaving India for the UK is bad for India - far from being a price for the UK, this would enormously benefit the UK. The UK will be getting skilled workers whose education is mostly at India's expense.

[–] calavera@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

I came here with the same question

[–] Naveen000can@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Getting visas are easy but citizenship is hard and when you think about the workers family it's really rare that they leave but instead they bring remittance to india

[–] jabjoe@feddit.uk 1 points 2 years ago

I think if might be about fairness.... probably still a sore point for India, especially with Britian.

Also, skilled workers may not always stay, and bring back what they learnt. Also, many send money home to relatives. We get another supply of skilled workers. It's win win.

But we know why Brexiteers don't want this....

[–] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 years ago

Trade of skilled workers is becoming a popular thing.
