Seems like giving the non shit-hole states to Canada would make everyone happier.

[–] SGforce@lemmy.ca 36 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Let's call it "Greater America"

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 23 points 7 months ago

Greater Canada

[–] DrDickHandler@lemmy.world 47 points 7 months ago (1 children)

In this timeline, Canada getting invaded is definitely on the bingo card. The future is absolutely going to shit.

[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 7 months ago (1 children)

They've stopped asking if they should invade Mexico and have moved on to how much should they invade Mexico. This timeline is terrible

[–] Zron@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

Where would the US be without a perpetual war in a desert?

It’s basically a national tradition at this point.

Or, dissolve the United States and create an EU like union of North American nation states in its place.

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I give it a year before red states beg to be part of a blue country. Most of them can't support themselves without money from other states.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 7 months ago

Getting some strong Fallout vibes from this story.

What about Greenland? Don't let that dream die, Donny!

[–] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 15 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The right is absolutely pissing its pants about this.

That mexico threat doesn’t mean a war, but if you threaten another nato country, you’re gonna have your ass handed to you.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 12 points 7 months ago (3 children)

If the USA invaded Canada, Canada would not be able to defend itself. Thankfully that idea has been unthinkable for a long time, but as the USA goes fascist, climate change kicks in and the water starts to run out, I could see that changing one day.

[–] whithom@discuss.online 7 points 7 months ago (2 children)

If the US attempted to invade another NATO country, the weight of NATO would come down. The US is not in a position to take over allied countries.

Mexico, on the other hand, would be like Russia invading Ukraine.

None of this is good for the people.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 4 points 7 months ago (2 children)

What is the weight of NATO without the USA? Especially against the USA?

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Everyone's economy would collapse and we would all starve.

[–] affiliate@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

i’m not certain trump is capable of understanding something like that

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 3 points 7 months ago

Yes, that's why us sane people in Europe would have preferred Biden. Better the devil you know.

All that snow and ice up there will melt, Canada will have plenty of water to hold over the US' head.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 12 points 7 months ago (4 children)

That's what I mean: the USA will be coming for Canada's water.

That'll be a great first line for the history book chapter "Beginning of the Water Wars"

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 12 points 7 months ago

Trump would cut off his nose to spiderface.

[–] twistypencil@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Ignore him, until he does anything

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Even so, it feels like Canada has to reconceive the purpose and scale of its military defenses. The USA can't be trusted to always be an ally.

[–] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 months ago

Definitely stop buying their weapon systems. Support EU and diversify

[–] bane_killgrind@slrpnk.net 2 points 7 months ago

I'm going to prepare for invasion waaaayyyy before they do anything

[–] IamAnonymous@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago (3 children)

Fox News is saying that the tariff “threat” has made Canada and Mexico to act on stopping the illegal immigration happening at the borders and that’s how Trump gets the job done, even before he is in office. I have not fact checked so I don’t know how much of it is a coincidence and how much the Canadian and Mexican government are freaking out about drug and illegal immigration control.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 16 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Mexico has already acted to reduce illegal immigrants entering the USA over its border by 76%, while Trump was lying about the problem being worse. None of it has anything to do with Trump, and he's just making effective cooperative action more difficult with his bluster and threats.

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/mexico-stick-with-policies-aimed-stopping-migrants-after-trump-win-2024-11-08/

Illegal immigration into the USA from Canada has increased but the numbers remain very small. Trump is lying when he claims it's a big problem.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 12 points 7 months ago

Fox Entertainment doesn't know shit about the acts of Canada, Mexico's, or even the U.S. actions pertaining to drugs or immigration. Theyve proven it over and over. They just gargle whatever bullshit they get the most money for and try not to puke while word vomiting it at the populous.

[–] Godort@lemm.ee 5 points 7 months ago

Oh god, please dont give Danielle Smith any ideas

[–] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

They could take each province and make them states. Don't think that will work out for Republicans

[–] Toto@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

If true, did Trudeau think playing to trumps sympathies would work?
