"Soon I discovered that this rock thing was true. Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil. Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet. All of a sudden, I found myself in love with the world. So there was only one thing that I could do, Was ding a ding dang my dang a long ling long"

this song / attitude / philosohy etc make me sad, perhaps there was a fire when you were born, but it constantly hungers for more, and feeding it will get us nothing but burnt.

[–] JustAnotherKay@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago

"We didn't light it but we tried to fight it"

I dunno man I feel like the song might actually agree with you

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I always thought the song was the opposite. It says „We didn't start it it was always like this“ and continues to listen events during their lifetime that were not already always in motion.

I always interpreted the song as saying „This is how it's always been and we can't change it is a lazy excuse for not trying to change anything.“

[–] TehBamski@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Exactly how I interpreted it the second time listening to it, many, many years ago.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Why are there so many twos though?

[–] JustAnotherKay@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

I changed em to 3s for you :)

[–] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yeah but we didn't put it out, either.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

"no we didn't light it, but we tried to fight it"

[–] 5ibelius9insterberg@feddit.org 3 points 10 months ago

Or as the Tiger Lillies sang: „It makes me quiet sad, to watch young people dance,

they could burn the discotheque, they’ve got every chance!

Start a fire, start a fire, start a fire today!

[–] BennyInc@feddit.org 3 points 10 months ago

If anyone hasn't seen the updated version for this song by fall out boy, I very much enjoyed it.

[–] Beetschnapps@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

It wasn’t burning when your parents grew up but they get a whiney pop song… it wasn’t burning when you grew up while that whiney pop song replayed…

If you’re sitting there now saying “we didnt start the fire” with a straight face you should jerk off into a mirror cause the world already suffered your bs so just turn inward.

It’s a song from a generation that took the country from the civil rights movement to trump. They poured gas on whatever fire they’re complaining about.
