While Frederick Lorz was greeted as the apparent winner, he was later disqualified as he had hitched a ride in a car for part of the race.
This has long been one of my favorite pieces of Olympic lore. I’ve always enjoyed the winner being disqualified because he’d actually been in a car for part of the race (yet still posted a worse time than past marathons), but there were a lot of new tidbits in here!
