IMO It's completely ridiculous that derailleurs have dominated bicycle shifting for so long.
They're just really not a good solution at all.

Because it's significantly lighter than gearhub, and there's no better solution available to shifting that's also light in weight. The sort of gearhub mentioned in the article are mainly for ebike.

  • has high efficacy
  • gears wear out relatively fast (debatable)
    • ... so they can sell you spare parts
