FYI Android is not about to become closed source. Google has their own internal dev branch and the publicly available main AOSP branch, this is already known. What they're doing is simplifying their release process so that rather than having two "main" branches AOSP will be downstream from their dev branch.

This change will also have minimal impact on most developers. App developers are unaffected, as it pertains only to platform development.

Bullshit. Not being able to follow along with relevant changes absolutely affects us.

Trunk based development is a good idea. Working in secrecy is not. They chose evil.

This is a clear indication of a lack of commitment to open source.

Why gee, nobody saw that coming...

Google is clearly planning to pull another Manifest V3 on us Android users.

Just to be clear: Android is NOT becoming closed source! Google remains committed to releasing Android source code (during monthly/quarterly releases, etc.) , BUT you won't be able to scour the AOSP Gerrit for source code changes like you could before.

I'm downstream of that (LineageOS, GrapheneOS) so that absolutely affects me. Worse, I expect this is the first step towards making Android entirely closed source.

This means I need a Linux tablet/phone next.
