my first read of the title was 'chinese bacon tower'

The tower sets both smoke and fire so they can smoke the bacon and then fry it over the fire.

Ah, to be a watchman on the tower. Quiet days of gazing at a distant horizon. Nothing to do but talk, read, and greet travelers.

That's pretty interesting but I feel like the sleeping quarters and the kitchen probably ought to have a roof or something. Probably for the barn too honestly.
