Mexico had banned slavery in 1837, long before its northern neighbor. The nation’s laws granted enslaved people access to freedom as soon as they set foot on Mexican soil. Mexican officials also refused to return runaways under the U.S.’s Fugitive Slave Act.

Mexico is awesome, but for some reason about half the US electorate thinks it's a hellish place. So no, it's not obvious that they're joking.

Too many of these morons think California, Chicago, et al. are shitholes too. Parts are, just like Mexico or anywhere else, but these idiots think the entire is shitty. Too aggressively ignorant and dumb to understand any type of nuance.
