Keep CoMaps.

I like this name: it's cute, short and memorable. I also like that 'co-' can have multiple meanings (cooperation, coexisting, community, carbon monoxyde).

[–] squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

A quick search for comaps shows a couple different projects already using that name. comaps.de is some kind of map visualization. Using the comaps name could lead to some confusion.

I like folk maps, really gives the correct community/citizen cartography vibe

+1 Folk Maps

Could you split it up so that it's one name per comment please? To make voting easier

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure thing! I have the split the options into multiple comments.

A play on organic meaning carbon-based (as in organic chemistry). Also I feel like it should be easy(ish) for speakers of other languages to pronounce. I may be wrong though!

Delta Maps (like the fork in the river)

[–] contrapunctus@lemmy.cafe 3 points 3 weeks ago

It's not bad, but

  1. There might be too many projects named "Delta ___". (...I'm guessing. I can really only think of Delta Chat.)
  2. Is being a fork the only identity of this project? I would rather the name reflect other characteristics... 🤔

Cartogrity (Cartography + Community)

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 4 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

I liked your suggestion quite a lot and came up with alternative based on it (the two words staying the same):

CartoUnity

[–] zyphlar@sopuli.xyz 6 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

CoCoMaps (community + collaboration)

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 4 points 4 weeks ago

Unfortunately there seems to be existing software with this name.

Lief Maps

  • after explorer Lief Erickson
[–] zyphlar@sopuli.xyz 10 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Alternate spelling of Leaf Maps as well (since most people will mis-hear and type the English word rather than the name) and maybe a leafy Lief is the mascot ;)

[–] CubeOfCheese@sopuli.xyz 6 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Wait I think I like this better

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 6 points 4 weeks ago

It's neat, but would cause confusion with https://leafmap.org/

@CubeOfCheese

"There is freedom within, there is freedom without"
"Don’t dream it’s over"

Seems appropriate for an Organic Maps fork 😄

There's MapLibre - a fork of Mapbox before it went full commercial

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 3 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Also http://libremap.org/ and https://github.com/libremap/ (different projects as far as I can tell, one of them dormant).

Based on @LilDumpy@lemmy.world 's great suggestion, I thought of the slogan "Grass-fed, free-range, organic, and community-powered maps". And of course a cow for a mascot.

[–] metehan@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think we can choose the name of a famous cartographer whose name is easy to pronounce in any language.

And then,

[Cartographer Name] + ["Maps" in your language]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cartographers

[–] metehan@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Under the 15th century heading, "Piri", the cartographer who prepared the top map among the sample maps shown there, would be a good name.

Or maybe, "Orbis" and "Battista" under the 16th century heading.

So Piri Maps, Orbis Maps, Battista Maps, etc.

In keeping with the "organic" theme, my submission is:

Free Range Maps

[–] zyphlar@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

MOSS / Moss Maps (like FOSS but natural)
