Like practically all herbivores, especially large ones, hippos are more than happy to eat meat whenever they can opportunistically do so, and are actually much more likely to do so than other large herbivores because of how effective they are at killing other animals. They've been known to kill and eat animals as large as wildebeest and zebras.

So they really aren’t herbivores?

[–] soviettaters@lemm.ee 6 points 2 years ago

They're herbivores that cheat sometimes

Mistaking "vegetarian" for "harmless pacifist" has been the last mistake of many would-be predators.

Aren't they practically marsh cows?

[–] nilaus@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Hippo milk connoisseur: "I detect hints of dirt, poop, and malaria"

They'll definitely eat you if they can, sorry

pretty sure the most dangerous animal in the world is far and away the mosquito

[–] paholg@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'd still rank them second, after humans.

[–] dingleberry@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Far more humans have died do mosquitos than in all wars combined. So I'd say they outranks us with ease.

[–] silent_water@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago

if the only criteria is human deaths, sure. mosquitoes on the other hand have never caused a mass extinction and they've definitely never caused the sheer level of cruelty and suffering we inflict daily on the animals we factory farm. there's really no competition.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

Yes, but how many mosquitoes have died due to mankind?

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

People associate deadliness with the capability of violent behavior ending in gory results. Find a one ton mosquito, people will cry danger.

I feel like that could apply to a lot of things.
