A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

RULES:

  1. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, etc. The past may be bigoted, but we are not.

  2. Memes must be Rome-related, not just the title. It can be about Rome, or using Roman aesthetics, or both, but the meme itself needs to have Roman themes.

  3. Follow Lemmy.world rules.

Not sure where to start on Roman history?

Explanation: The Roman Emperor Caligula once ordered the Roman legionaries to 'attack' the sea, stabbing the tides and collecting seashells as booty. This is sometimes considered proof of his insanity, but others suggest it may have been meant as a humiliation for the legionaries for one reason or another.

Also, I think that bust is actually of Augustus, but we'll let that slide.

I always thought it was one of those "it never happened, but historians hated him and made up some facts to show everyone how dumb and stupid he was".

The 'war against the sea' factoid isn't even new: greek historians said the same about Xerxes (iirc he ordered his soldiers to flog the Hellespont), and that one was almost certainly fake as well.
