Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

English is not my main language so this was a significant and funny "A-ha!" moment for me.

They are more "pea" than "nut", though. They are a legume.

Really, it should be called a peapea. Because there are usually two of them together.

Well, pineapple aren't apples and starfishes aren't even fish, so...

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 9 points 6 days ago

Pen. Pineapple. Apple. Pen.

When literally every other language said "ananas", English panicked and mentally combined the concept of a pinecone and a freakin' apple

[–] NONE_dc@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Meanwhile in Spanish we got rid of the apple part and simply call them "Piñas".

By that logic pea should be called peapeapeapeapeapeapea

There's a type of pea which is called "Kiechererbse" in German. "Erbse" is the German word for pea. And "Kiecher" is the old German word for pea.

Ok, so since pea in Old English is pise, should it be peapisepisepisepisepisepise or peapeapeapeapeapeapise? peapeapeapisepisepisepise?

Why are so many cats appearing after I read that comment out loud

[–] judgyweevil@feddit.it 1 points 4 days ago

You're welcome

English is my 1st language and I didn’t realize this until you just pointed it out.

Get an uncooked one and eat it. It tastes like peas.

[–] sxan@midwest.social 84 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's because the pea is stored in the nuts.

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago

It's SCIENCE

[–] AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world 46 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They’re not nuts that resemble peas, they’re peas that resemble nuts.

Charlie Brown saying "good grief"

(I didn't catch on until reading the comments)

[–] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Same. I was over here thinking “is the world we live in just a closed pod, are we alone in here?” like it was maybe really deep and inspiring

[–] tkw8@lemm.ee 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think they’re actually legumes, not nuts.

3rd rock from the sun did a whole episode on this, starring the woman who played Roseannes sister as Dick's new love interest.

25 years later, and I still pronounce legume the way they did in that episode as I recite this fact.
