OH MY god lol this has been a wild Qualifying! Aston upsets the Tifosi at home?

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Rare big brain moment by Aston to burn a set of mediums for a Q3 visit. This C6 tire can't even last a lap it seems.

[โ€“] 4am@lemm.ee 9 points 5 days ago

Watching Stroll knock Hamilton out of qualifying did kind of break my heart a bit. Nobody deserves that ๐Ÿ˜…

Safety in modern F1 is at such a high level I genuinely think fatalities are eliminated outside of complete freak accidents. Looking at stuff like this and the Zhou Silverstone crash and the drivers coming out unscathed in both instances is absolutely unbelievable.

[โ€“] Microw@lemm.ee 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

At this point, it's probably more unsafe for track marshals and photographers who work up close and are always somewhat in danger of getting hit by a car or car parts

[โ€“] espentan@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Give every marshal and photographer an F1 safety cell to sit in, safety taken care of! /s

Also Grosjean would have been dead if it happened 10 years earlier.

If he had started his F1 career in Red Bull, he could have been a world champion. I feel so sorry for him.

Is this the Italian brainrot?

[โ€“] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Huge whack for Tsunoda. Geez that second Red Bull car is cursed.

I was surprised myself before they showed the replay on why the car was that badly damaged. Luckily he got out unscathed.

Same. I was looking all over the gravel for the path he took in and there weren't any tracks from the first few angles they showed. When they showed the replay I understood why- He was in the air.

Omg both Ferraris out in Q2. Knocked out by both Aston Martins.

And where did that Sainz P1 come from.

Madness.

[โ€“] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago

Another big crash yikes. Colapinto on Alpine debut noooooo..

Lawson didn't get an opportunity to set a better lap to get to Q2. Unlucky for him.

Pole position? ๐Ÿ‘€

[โ€“] Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 5 days ago

Flavio out here destroying careers

[โ€“] Microw@lemm.ee 7 points 5 days ago

Good that that fence held properly, seems like the photographers and spectators behind were all unharmed (though that's always hard to tell from TV images, we didnt learn about the injured photographers in Monaco last year until after the race)

Happy to see Yuki out and walking away under his own power. Scary off, wow...

Ferrari gets Strolled

11th and 12th is pain. And Kimi...

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 4 points 5 days ago

Tyre management has been Kimi's biggest weakness so far (common for rookies) and with the C6 tyre not even lasting a lap without management it's no surprise he struggled a bit here.

[โ€“] Microw@lemm.ee 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Lol Astons suddenly found pace

[โ€“] Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 5 days ago

Being on the correct tyre helps

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 5 points 5 days ago

Yuki noooo.

Another fantastic Q3. Razor thin gaps between P1 and P2.

Russell's medium gamble seems to have paid off.

Finally a ray of hope for Aston Martin?

Oof thats a big one

[โ€“] Microw@lemm.ee 4 points 5 days ago

Oh no oh no oh no

[โ€“] Microw@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago

Wurz is saying that Colapinto's mistake is similar to the mistake he made in Las Vegas last year, which is not good since it suggests he didnt learn from that

[โ€“] Microw@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Haas still trying to argue that Ollie's lap should count.. imo the light was red before he crossed the line

[โ€“] hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 days ago

Fuck it, 16 people in Q2, why not.

[โ€“] Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 5 days ago

I think he crossed the line before the red flag. Please look at the caution panel and not the lights that indicate the end of the session.

[โ€“] 4am@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago

Nope, watch the replay. Gantry lights are session end. Marshal flag LED panel didnโ€™t light until after he crossed the line, meaning marshals and/or race control didnโ€™t throw the red u til after he crossed the line, and even the FIAโ€™s own timing system agreed.

The only explanation is that the lap was disqualified for track limits anyway (would explain the delay while the stewards review) but there should be a statement about that if thatโ€™s the case; it also should have been apparent to Haas without holding ready until green.

[โ€“] Microw@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago

Can someone please delete that whole Alpine team? Maybe sell it to some Lotus guys again?

[โ€“] hal_5700X@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Ferrari doing Ferrari things.

[โ€“] hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I thought softs were mandatory in Q3?

[โ€“] Linen04@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I think it's only mandatory in Sprint Qualy

[โ€“] hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah fair enough, I checked sporting regulations afterwards and compound choice is only restricted in sprint quali.

[โ€“] Microw@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago

Only sprint quali has the mandatory tires. Normal quali has free selection.

[โ€“] 4am@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

No, softs by choice in Q3, a fresh set just for Q3 that is turned in after the session. Q1, Q2, and optionally Q3 is the medium tyre; which I believe comes from the teamโ€™s 13 allocated dry weather tyres

The Williams bookend Q2, what a lap from Carlos!

Holy shit another big shunt.
