Lemmy getting bigger wouldn't mean that smaller communities vanish. It would actually allow for more small communities around niche topics to be able to sustain themselves on the platform, and those would still be close-knit spaces where regulars would know each other pretty well. To me that's the biggest thing Lemmy lacks that Reddit has, I can't just type in /r/gameI'mcurrentlyplaying, /r/showI'mcurrentlywatching, etc and find an active community for all my hyperfixations.
Just Post
Just post something π
Yeah I'm still on reddit for hobby stuff. My hobbies aren't even niche by any means, they're just not here.
I do find myself on Reddit still as the content is obviously larger and more varied. I can't comment due to a site wide ban, which might not be such a bad thing really.
I must say that the proliferation of very young people is obvious at times and annoying. The same old same old tired "joke" comments aren't fun either.
So yes it's nice to be here. Not even sure if I'm using it to the maximum potential yet. I'll work it out eventually.
same thing, on the reddit due to a shadowban im not keen on making another account in a different locations, consider how much shadowbanning is going on right now and how reddits filters are extremely sensitive right now+ the subreddit filters you have to deal with as well, i visited the shadowban sub its so pervasive now, peoples old 5+years accounts are getitng trashed by the filters which uses AI.
the problem that reddit has lemmy has it as well, the politics/news subs, and communities same people that misconstrued your comments and receive a ban on reddit will do it here too, which makes me think its the same type of people.
there are nich subs i visit there that are not on lemmy at all.
Right? For DIY hotas stuff, specific subreddits for actualbudget questions, and that sort of niche thing I find myself having to go back. There simply isn't a large enough population for those things to be useful here. If I created a community, statistically I think I would be the only one in it indefinitely, going by the size of the reddit sub.
bit iffy on the .world situation
?
50% of Lemmy is hosted on lemmy.world
Personally, I think that's because it's one of the only instances that advertises itself as general purpose and isn't going for a theme like LGBTQ+ or programming or gaming or whatever. If you're a noob looking for a Reddit replacement, lemmy.world and lemm.ee seem like the main two options. And I'm sorry to say but lemm.ee's image hosting limitations are a big thing that counts against it on a platform where 50% of what people do is upload memes. So it seems like lemmy.world is the only real option.
For a noob, that is. I know now that if I sign up on a programmingβ’ instance, I can still view general content just like on Reddit. But as a noob it looks like your options are a bunch of themed and limited instances, plus world and ee.
sh.itjust.works master race checking in
that make sense why politics is on there, its probably the largest community here as it is on reddit, and the same type of people that would ban users for misinterpreting their comments.
Freedom is for everyone
I'm of two minds about this. I'm actually starting to enjoy seeing the same people that I like seeing regularly. Been using an app that lets you tag users and I've had a lot of fun in the last couple of days tagging different people that I like with π, β, π or β lol. I've also given one person a red flag π₯ so far but haven't actually seen them around again.
But also, some more activity would definitely be nice. One thing I like on Reddit is that you can go to AskReddit and just spend the whole day there refreshing the feed and talking about whatever, if you want. Here, even if you combine all the different ask and chat style communities, you'll still end in days old posts in no time.
It's also nice being able to search niche things and finding active colonies that revolve around those things. Whether it's a hobby or a collectable or that obscure TV show that you watched as a kid that no one ever talks about.
I wouldn't mind a best of both worlds here.
