Burros's suicide became a national news story, widely publicized for several weeks.[129] The New York Times was criticized in the aftermath of the story, by readers, its own staff, several Jewish groups,[130] and neo-Nazis.[131] Some of the Times' readers felt the paper had invaded his privacy, or that he was mentally ill. Some staff also believed the paper had gone too far with the story and that it served as overly dramatic journalism, since Burros was not a major figure.[130][132] Others praised the paper for focusing on someone who could be a societal danger and argued Burros had given up his right to privacy when he became a political figure. Rosenthal was disturbed by both the criticism of the story and the suicide of Burros, but came to believe that something else would have triggered Burros eventually. Phillips was also upset over Burros's suicide, but did not regret writing the story.[132] There was an increase in suicides in the period after Burros's suicide, which has been studied as an example of the Werther effect, or the copycat suicide phenomenon.[133]
Of course, one doesn't have to be Jewish to appreciate a Nazi being dead. Lots of people are better off when a Nazi dies.
