It's great that 10GbE is getting cheaper, but at $10 for the network chip alone, there is no way it will be available at a $80 mainboard.

But at least it likely will be an option for midrange boards.

Edit: just took a look, the cheapest mainboard with 10GbE onboard is now €370. Currently, if you need 10GbE, it's smarter to buy an expansion card.

Is it not better to use fibre for 10Gbps than Ethernet?

Fibre also has its disadvantages. Copper cables are sturdy and can power the connected components via Power over Ethernet, making them the better choice for e.g. Wifi Access Points.

Yes. Base-T 10Gb is limited to 55m depending on the cable

While fibre can go from 400m to to 80Km depending on the cable and optics.

If you want to rip out all existing wiring and add SFP+ with fiber on all your end devices, then yes.

And that's great and all, but I don't need a new board. What about a $10 add-on card for those that can't/don't need to buy a whole board? A quick look on Amazon, competing add-on cards are $70 and up... For $10 they can swallow the market whole for this.

Realtek plans a PCI based card with this chip too. Pricing is expected around $50 for the customer.
