I was taught in the Ohio school system in the 80s that settlers would move into nomadic lands, often making trades that the original occupants didn't understand (you can't own the land!?!), and then the original occupants would be surprised to return and find the settlers had built permanent shelters and towns.

That is when people were not massacred, forced to move, or wiped out by disease.
