Why is the Rum Gone?: Day 3 of Lather Games

  • Brush: Muninn Big Fucking Motherlode Tropicana $RESIN
  • Razor: Böker S.S. Paris Wins (6/8", carbon steel, full hollow, square point) $MACHINEAGE
  • Lather: Capt. Fawcett's – Scapicchio
  • Post Shave: Declaration Grooming – B Cubed
  • Osma: Osma – Osma
  • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – Boat Drinks

Theme justification: Scapiccio is a bay rum plus figs and olives, and the dude is a captain. B Cubed is a bay rum as well, and Boat Drinks are on a boat.

The razor is a perfect fit for today's theme, but it is a bit of a mystery, too. To the best of my abilities, I can date it to pre 1930 (because it doesn't have the "Made in Germany" stamp that would have been mandatory starting then) and it can't predate the S.S Paris' win in 1889 because, well, why would they have made the razor (A bit more background for those interested). So I feel pretty safe claiming the $MACHINEAGE tag.

I almost forgot about the Osma challenge, so I reshot the SOTD pic (previous pic). I used it ✅

I used to love bay rum scents starting out, and BaM's Bay Rum was my favourite soap at some point. Now I find it mildly nauseating. No idea why it changed but no bueno.

I love bay rum, but I use it sparingly. I can see how it could become nauseating.

Yeah, I just overdid it at some point. I gave away by BaM Bay Rum a while back

You use the Osma shaving soap as aftershave?

And how do you like the KEPKINH soap?

[–] pridetwo@sub.wetshaving.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yes

KEPKINH soap is decent, the wood bowl is primo though

June 3rd, 2025: Why is the Rum Gone?

  • Brush: Rad Dinosaur Creations - Cavern Dream w/ AP Pure Bliss Synthetic $PREMIUMPLASTIC
  • Razor: WrongCoyote9525 - 3D Printed Razor $PLASTIC
  • Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
  • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Terror - Soap
  • Post Shave: Zingari Man - The Navigator - Recovery Splash
  • Post Shave: Proraso - After Shave Stone
  • Fragrance: Old Spice - Classic - EdC

Daily Theme Justification: Today we’re asked to used something “nautically themed in some way”. Barrister & Mann’s Terror line up was inspired by the 19th century ships HMS Terror and HMS Erebus, whose fate was brutally met by the unforgiving and inhospitable elements of an Arctic Circle expedition.

Daily Theme: Why is the Rum Gone? BECAUSE THE FRICKIN' OCEAN SWALLOWED THE SHIPS WHOLE. Enough of these idealized views of the ocean, beaches, and transcontinental voyages. No more sun bathing with piña coladas with little umbrellas at a beach resort or cruise ship. Open waters with endless horizons will literally and figuratively destroy your mind, body, soul… and nose. In fact, the popular nautically inspired bay rum was created by some stinky sailors because they were looking for anything to neutralize their natural musk. Barrister and Mann’s Terror was made to remind us of the ruthless nature of virtually boundless waters riddled with ice and hopelessness. With scents notes of Frankincense, Cold Water, and Peppermint, Terror gives you a tiny glimpse into the sailors’ final moments as the bone chilling ice water took their final breath, penetrated their lungs, and dissolved into the endless abyss we call the ocean. This is the true nature of the ocean, not imbibing cocktails on a beach listening to shitty pop hits. Thankfully, we can just shave with Terror and call it a day.

Daily Challenge: I hate alum. The last time I used it was actually for Osma day for LG 2024. However, just as the sailors on HMS Terror and HMS Erebus had no choice to succumb to breath taking salt water, I shall lean into the discomfort in remembrance. In keeping with the theme, I incorporated some alum and coarse sea salt in an Old Spice mug into my Terror lather to give that cold, salty, and abrasive experience the sailors felt as they disintegrated into eternity. It created a shitty lather and stifled it, but it was enough to get a foamy vague layer of soap across my mug. Of course, the razor drug across my face with a bad lather and was uncomfortable, but at least I am alive. I used my neglected Proraso After Shave Stone (which felt better than I remember) then finished off my shave with Zingari Man The Navigator splash to give aquatic, yet warm woods and ambery hints to feel better and “headed back home” from cold seas. Finally, Old Spice Cologne invocating that familiar, comforting, and safe smell that reminds many of us warm hug from our elders of time elapsed. I survived today.

Quintidi 15 Prairial an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Caille

Good shave, nice scent for the warmer days!

Have a good day!

  • Brush: Elite Razor Honduran Rosewood Burl 24mm HMW Fan $WOODEN
  • Razor: Geneva Cutlery Co. 6/8" Hollow Ground Round Point
  • Lather: Captain's Choice - Bay Rum - Soap
  • Post Shave: Captain's Choice - Cat O' Nine Tails - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: West Coast Shaving - Alum

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

I purchased Captain's Choice Bay Rum because I like Bay Rum and the owner (Scott) told me that it was his biggest seller. Of the few bay rum scents I have tried, this is still my favorite. The Cat O' Nine Tails aftershave has a strong, dark bay rum scent. The alcohol content on full send. Love it!

I purchased this alum when I decided to get into wet shaving. I thought I would need it, but other than a few first attempts, have found I never use it. I think that if you want an alum that you never use, but want to keep on a shelf somewhere, that alum should be Osma.

Theme justification: It's an A-tier Old Spice dupe, followed by another A-tier Old Spice dupe. No other justification needed.

Daily challenge: I used Osma after my shave today. It was fine. I used to use this after shave because of "conventional wisdom," but I've honestly not noticed a difference in my results since I stopped. It's still nice to keep around for any shaves where I have knicks or weepers that need help closing. Though honestly, a styptic pencil is a much better tool for that job.

$SELFCARE -- This morning I got out pretty early for some speed intervals at a local track. I'm training for a half marathon this fall and have been ramping up with a new running course. I also went to therapy today. More people should go to therapy. We all inherit so much baggage and so many thought patterns that we rarely (if ever) examine. Noticing some of these thought patterns and being honest with myself about how I got them and what they mean has been a game-changer for me over the last several years.

$FOF -- Endurance into Reserve Spice is a gimme -- just two solid takes on the classic Old Spice scent layered on top of one another. Seaforth! Leather is where it gets interesting. The bright coriander and West Indies Bay play nicely with the spicy, sophisticated Old Spice vibe. The woody cedar and smooth leather carry the feeling through to an exceptionally relaxing and refined place. This was an excellent scent-scape to wind down my day with.

Onwards and upwards!

The branding for Noble Otter branding heavily features Otters, a sea-dwelling mammal. According to Artificial Intelligence, "Ninety percent of the world's sea otters live in Alaska's coastal waters".

Ninety percent of the world’s sea otters live in Alaska’s coastal waters”

Otter aristocracy might unfortunately be among the remaining 10%.
