Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Whether it be a particularly annoying mechanic, bad design, poorly optimised... What are some of the worst soulslikes you've played? And what makes them so bad?

Mortal Shell.

Because no matter what version I've played, I would get an issue with the enemies only rendering when you're pretty much on top of them.

Kinda hard to fight shit you can't even see.

Gonna have to go with this as well.

Game was ass. Way too many bugs as well as the controls being too stiff and janky as fuck.

Jesus, that's horrible. But it has to be a rig-issue then, some kind of incompatibility, right? Since the game seems to run ok with most people, I'd wager

It happens in the PlayStation release, on a PS5 too. Found some threads about it suggesting that the DLC fixed it.

It did not.

Oh well, guess I won't be playing then.

Looking forward to giving Lords of the Fallen a try when I get around to it - you've convinced me in one of your previous comments here :)

Doesn't happen on any version of pc. Mortal Shell is okay, some cool concepts, and very decent combat, but nothing too amazing. But it's also a 12h game. I'd definitely give it a try if you have a pc and can get it for cheap (or free, considering Epic gave it away like 5 times).

It's a hot take, but Lies of P. I really despise how they implemented comedy reliefs in this game. That Gemini monologue when you going up the mountain in a cable car is so so bad and absolutely ruins the moment. There are quite a lot of positive moments in the game, but humour and boring location design overweight many of them for me

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's fair - different strokes for different people. I didn't mind it too much and was just in awe of the story and gameplay. Maybe the DLC would win you over once it's out?

[–] froufox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, maybe. But I'll wait for people to leave their reviews on the DLC first. There are so many appealing games being released these days, and so little time to play them. I'm in the middle of my E33 playthrough now :)

Absolutely, priorities and all

(Ive only played fromsoft) Controversial take probably but elden ring. I just really didn't care for the massive map which ended up feeling pretty empty to me.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

I'd probably have to go for Elden Ring too for similar reasons. I see the appeal of the game and I've liked lots of it, really, but the open world was just a huge turnoff. I do see myself liking the open world if I don't spoil the contents of it beforehand, but overall it's just not my cup of tea.

Maybe Demon's Souls, but at least that one was more of a classic soulslike and was the game to kick it all off

The Surge.

It had this limb targeting mechanic which didn't work for shit.

And it had animations for backstabs and those types of things, but you didn't get iframes at the end of the animation. So anytime you do a good combat thing, you get fucked up by the guy standing beside you when your move is done.

Maps had insufficient unique details, which made it so you never knew what direction you were facing, where you came from, or where you were going.

Even an old game like Demon Souls... every single room, every square inch of that entire map has something unique where you can tell what room it is. Even if it's just a dead body positioned in the corner, you know it a certain room because that body is in that specific spot.

Such a good concept that you could loot parts and upgrade... Squandered by 99% map design and substandard combat.

Totally agree, the premise sounded interesting, but poorly executed. I got 1 and 2 on sale at the same time, played through number 1, thinking maybe i just had to get past the learning phase, never got better. Tried number 2 in case they had learnt from their missteps, they had not.

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Oh thanks for telling me!

I had heard they literally learned nothing from the first and did the exact same boo boos in 2

I appreciate knowing that because now I'm going to avoid it, I had considered trying it on sale but no way now

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago

Have you played Surge 2? Is it any better?

Shame that a German soulslike flopped like that :(

[–] alphabethunter@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Crazy! I love The Surge 1 and 2, honestly, way more than DS3, Pinocchio or Lords of the Fallen. I can't remember ever getting lost in those games, the maps looked fairly unique to me. If I were to hop in today, I'd still manage to navigate most of the games from memory alone. Maybe not the end game areas, but the early game areas are still easy to recall vividly in my mind (and I played both games around release). The limb cutting system works really well too: you use it to farm gear sets, you can use it to deactivate parts of your enemy, you can use it to trigger weaknesses in elites and bosses. Yes, you don't get i-frames. You have to be smart about using it (git gud??). Don't try to perform a finishing move animation when there's five other exos about to hit your ass. But, I also don't remember parts of the game where that many enemies were around, it was usually only three at most. Finishing enemies had the perk of giving extra tech scrap, so it was supposed to be used only when finishing a fight. Plenty of cool exoskeletons in the game as well, sole cool weapons. And the game doesn't really overstays its welcome. It's around 20h, maybe? I remember doing 30h for the second one while doing pretty much everything. The story is also fairly cool in both games, with interesting final bosses.

Every review disagrees with you and honestly you're just being zealous.

Don't do the git gud thing when the game has a massive design flaw where you cannot even avoid finishing animations and bullshit like that. They auto trigger.

Like what you like, but man you're out to lunch on this one LOL

[–] alphabethunter@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Just checked, reviews are around an average of 7 for both users and reviewers. Which is not a flying score, but also not that bad. And I'm certain that a lot of the less than positive reviews come from a fan base who used to think the OG dark souls was perfect and just didn't want to try anything slightly different at the time.

On top of that, you're straight up mistaken. I was pretty sure finishing moves/executions didn't auto trigger, but still decided to go on and check. They don't. You HAVE to press a button to trigger them. You can just light attack to finish an enemy if you are not ready to be animation locked. And I don't see that as a flaw. Honestly, it baffles me that DS gives you i-frames on crits, and some other random actions, like opening a door.
