Welcome to YUROP
The Ultimate Eurozone of Culture, Chaos, and Continental Excellence

A glorious gathering place to celebrate (and lovingly roast) the lands, peoples, quirks, and contradictions of Her Most Magnificent Europa. From the fjords to the Med, the steppes to the Atlantic spray, this is a shrine to everything that makes Europe gloriously weird, wonderfully diverse, and occasionally passive-aggressive in 24 languages.

Here we toast:
πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί The progressive Union of Peace (and paperwork)
πŸ§€ The freest of health care
🍷 The finest of foods
πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ The liberalest of liberties
🌍 The proud non-members and honorary cousins πŸ’Ά And the eternal dance of unity, confusion, and cultural banter.

Post memes, news, satire, linguistic wars, train maps, cursed food photos, Eurovision fever, propaganda and whatever makes you scream β€œonly in YUROP.”

Leave your stereotypes at the border control and enjoy the ride.

All this time we thought it was the Germans with no sense of humour. Turns out it was the Belarusians all along

[–] ladel@feddit.uk 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why has Hungary got it in for the Scots?

[–] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I can't speak about the Hungarians, but at least in Germany the scottish jokes are all about how they are penny pinchers and Scrooges.

Is it a joke if it's true?

[–] hyves@feddit.nl 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You go all the way to Scotland for that, instead of the Netherlands?

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Usually, we joke about our domestic penny pinchers, the Swabians, first, before resorting to imported Jokes about the Scottish.

Haven't heard many jokes about Poland since the 90s maybe early 2000s in Germany.

[–] Hubi@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Really? Car theft jokes are still fairly popular in my experience.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 month ago

I know they were, but I haven't heard one for at least 20 years. Maybe we had too many polish seasonal workers in my town, but no stolen cars.

Italians apparently just joke about each other

[–] brokenlcd@feddit.it 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If you aren't italian. You can't even imagine the animosity between south and north italy. And frankly, in most cases it falls into essentially racism. Even between two adjacent cities. It's appalling.

[–] abbadon420@lemm.ee 6 points 1 month ago

Don't forget that Italy is basically "The United States of Italy"

Scandinavian banter 101:

  • When one country rips on another country, the 3rd country usually joins on the side of the offender.

Scandinavian banter 201:

  • It's usually between Danes and Swedes, with Norway either getting the popcorn or joining the offense.
  • We rarely see the Finns join in, but they're welcome if they want to.

Scandinavian banter, graduation:

  • Sweden is obviously the inferior country.

EDIT: But if anyone outside of Scandinavia were to mock, for example, the swedes, we've got their backs. I recall something said a while back when Sweden wanted to join NATO, and Erdigan was raising a stink: "Sweden sucks balls. But Erdogan can gargle more of them".

Just for the record: I know many swedes, most of whom are wonderful people.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago

Swede here, I don't agree that we are the inferior country, but we are absolutely the teachers pet of Scandinavia, and deserve to be mocked like hell for that.

I'd be interested to hear some bosnian jokes about Gemany

So an archduke walks into a sandwich shop...

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As a Brit, I never joke about the Irish. I was fully expecting it to be a French flag. In fact, I was expecting the French flag to be there a lot

[–] Hubi@feddit.org 9 points 1 month ago

Austria and Germany:

spoiler

Would be interesting to see the whole statistic of this. For Germany I'm pretty sure, that its quite a close race between Poland and France.

I love how belgium is surrounded by banter. 3/4 neighbours chose the tiny state of belgium.

Edit: Oh my god poor Bosnia

[–] nichtsowichtig@feddit.org 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I hate to be that guy - but I'm interested in the data for this map? Or is it made up based on vibes?

[–] pantherina@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago

As a german, I dont even know anything about Poland. Like that country would not really exist.

Neomagazin Royale Show about that topic

[–] illi@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm at a loss - who is being made fun of by Northern Ireland?

[–] NichEherVielleicht@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This ist the rest green of the Irish flag in Britain.

[–] illi@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Oh. Right, I'm dumb. The blue bit right beside it confused me but that is part of Ireland πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

[–] tyler@programming.dev 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Sweden and Germany really ganged up on. Who is Croatia making fun of?

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

bosnia & herzogovina

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago

Greece, too.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I'm surprised that italy counts as making fun of itself but not turkey.

I read a shitload of turkish joke books growing up, and the most prominent type of joke is about people from the north (Laz Jokes). I don't remember any greek jokes.

Here's a sample.

Dursun goes to the US. He gets rich. He calls his friend Temel , and says "oooooh man, you need to come here. even if you just pick up the money on the pavement, you'll be rich!" . Temel goes to the US, and as soon as he steps out the airport, he sees a quarter on the ground. He exclaims "I've only been here 2 minutes and I already found my first job!"

Temel and Dursun are stock characters from the north.

Nobody's making fun of the Dutch. Good!

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The Flemish part of Belgium is.

[–] abbadon420@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago

Thankfully. It wouldn't be fun otherwise. But they're not pictured on this map

[–] pulsey@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago
[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

I am offended by this picture. πŸ˜‚

[–] Lembot_0003@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Belarus now jokes about potatoes (lack of potatoes, to be precise)...

[–] Justas@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

The joke about Estonians is that they are slow.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

I think Icelanders joke about Poland more
