MODERATORS

The former New South Wales premier Bob Carr has warned the environment movement is "In danger of fading" in the face of massive challenges protecting habitats from population pressures and climate change.

"I think there's a danger in recent years of the environment movement fading," Carr said.

Carr said he believed the best results for the environment were achieved when dedicated voluntary conservationists worked with "Sympathetic Labor governments".

Carr said he was very confident the premier, Chris Minns, and the environment minister, Penny Sharpe, would work together with the environment movement and farmers on the issue.

A review of the state's Biodiversity Conservation Act, led by Dr Ken Henry, found the laws were failing to protect the environment and that clearing of vegetation and intensifying land use had led to the destruction of habitat across the state.

Most Australians be like: "What's an environment?"

[–] mattomattic@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 years ago

They know what it is, but they're too busy on the app betting about how fucked up it can get. You Aussies love those dumb apps. OK, I'm kidding, I actually think they're too scared to protest because climate protesters are being vilified, harassed and jailed as criminals. Can't disrupt the narrative - The beers won't drink themselves! Won't be long before Australia has something like Belgium's pre-crime detention. Naughty Aussies will be rounded up and detained before they go and protest an event, and no one will give a fuck while the pubs open or Gogglebox is on. Once everyone is forced to get the Digital ID with facial recognition no one will be game to protest because they will freeze your bank accounts. And you won't be able to transact financially because cash money is nearly dead in Australia. Last time I was there everyone did everything on their corporate tracking and advertising device (phone). You guys are so screwed and you don't even know it. Your government does a tremendous job of projecting the illusion of freedom while you actually have none. Fuck me, your last Prime Minister gave himself four extra ministerial positions without consulting anyone, which breaks your federal laws, and no one did anything! You guys need an ICAC before anything can be remedied. Only vote for candidates willing to implement a robust ICAC.

its amazing Bob Carr looks exactly the same as when he was premier what... 15+ years ago now?

I asked because the last 15 years has been hard on me.

Bob Carr, the former Premier of New South Wales (NSW), has been involved in various activities and roles over the past 15 years. Here is a summary of his notable contributions:

  • Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute (ACRI) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) (2014-2019)[1]: After leaving politics, Carr served as the Director of ACRI, focusing on promoting understanding and cooperation between Australia and China.

  • Professor at the Institute for Sustainable Futures, UTS[2]: Carr also worked as a professor, contributing to research and education in the field of sustainability.

  • Minister for Foreign Affairs, Australian Government (2012-2013)[1]: Carr entered federal politics as a New South Wales senator and served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs during his time in the Australian government.

  • Advocate for environmental causes: In recent years, Carr has been actively supporting environmental initiatives, including calling for an overhaul of land-clearing laws and backing the end to land clearing in NSW[3][5].

  • Warning about the fading environment movement: Carr has expressed concerns about the environment movement's challenges and the need for continued action to address environmental issues[3].

  • Controversy over expenses: In 2020, it was reported that former NSW premiers, including Carr, were claiming significant yearly expenses, with Carr's expenses reaching nearly $1 million[6].

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The former New South Wales premier Bob Carr has warned the environment movement is “in danger of fading” in the face of massive challenges protecting habitats from population pressures and climate change.

“I want to give them my engagement to maintain their energy levels because saving species is more urgent than ever given the pressures of population growth and the climate shift.”

“The previous government took a wrecking ball to our environmental protection laws and without decisive action we risk a future where much of the ecosystems we take for granted are no more,” he said.

These include fixing the state’s biodiversity offsets scheme, which Sharpe has committed to doing after several inquiries – prompted by extensive Guardian Australia reporting – identified serious flaws.

Brad Smith, the acting chief executive of the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, said this had contributed to a threefold increase in land clearing and allowed for the destruction of important habitat.

The previous government presided over 12 years of environmental neglect that led to record numbers of threatened species, increased land clearing and saw koalas become endangered and on track to extinction.”
