If you want to explore the most toxic community on the internet, install Dota 2.

Appropriate reaction honestly

[–] BattleBeetle@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Ah yes, the "if you don't know the hero then don't play it" game

[–] Fermion@feddit.nl 12 points 2 years ago

I too remember getting chewed out for randoming in an unranked match.

Now my friends exclusively play in private lobbies with bots.

Where gamers play to not have fun

[–] ristoril_zip@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's really sad considering how amazing DOTA was umpty bajillion years ago. Also Enfo's survival.

[–] PraiseTheSoup@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

and also X Hero Siege and Hero Line Wars

[–] joemo@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 years ago

I stopped playing dota after thousands of hours because I got fed up with the community. I only have a certain amount of time I can game now and it's frustrating to waste that little bit of time with super toxic and raging teammates. Does it happen in every game? No but it happened enough that I don't want to risk it.

It looks like they finally are working to fix that, however I transitioned over to a new game - Path of Exile. It's great, the only person I can blame for mistakes now is myself 😀.

OpenTTD is a good time if you like those types of management games. The graphics are old, but it’s still fun.

[–] carrmcg@lemmy.world 28 points 2 years ago

If you find yourself enjoying openTTD, I’d highly recommend trying the JGR patch pack. Link It adds loads of improvements that the steam version doesn’t have. I started on the steam version, loved it, and love the JGR version even more.

[–] mihnt@kbin.social 12 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I caught a stream of TheSpiffingBrit playing it the other day and I downloaded it because of that. It's neat, but it does take some learning.

[–] bionicjoey@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 years ago

My favourite OpenTTD gameplay video is the Valefisk video where he invites his Patreon supporters to play a game with him and his friends and then ruins their day by basically starting the server early so that his corp already has more money than the other players.

Master Hellish has a tutorial series on YouTube that's very good.

[–] rem26_art@kbin.social 51 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I'd throw in a vote for HoloCure. It's like Vampire Survivors, and even if you know nothing about Hololive, its pretty addicting.

[–] takenaps@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

Will check it out, just stumbled into vampire survivors that game is awesome

[–] mana@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 2 years ago

As someone who doesn't follow vtubers, I can confirm Holocure is excellent, and obviously made with love. Every character has a unique playstyle, and the aesthetc is a nice departure from the gloom common to the genre.

[–] UntouchedWagons@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I played a bit of it and what I got was completely different to what I saw kronii playing. She had what looked like a fishing and farming Sim while I had reverse bullet hell. Runs great on the steam deck though.

[–] pokemaster787@ani.social 3 points 2 years ago

"Holo House" is the farming and fishing minigame. I believe you unlock it once you beat stage 1, it shows up in the main menu as "???" until unlocked.

[–] ExtraMedicated@lemmy.world 36 points 2 years ago (3 children)

The Looker was a funny parody of The Witness. Made me laugh.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Apparently the creator of The Witness didn't like it because he's allegedly a pretentious twat.

[–] Taako_Tuesday@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 years ago

Doesn't surprise me that he didn't like it. It lampshades how the themes of the original game are not actually as profound as he says they are, while also being way more fun than the majority of the original

[–] Lev_Astov@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

I just love the review of it that states, "if you like The Witness, you'll like The Looker, but if you hated The Witness, you'll love The Looker."

[–] RudeGryphon@lemm.ee 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The ending had me rolling. I didn't realize what was going on until just right before the reveal. Great game to check out because you can beat it in a couple hours

[–] evilgiraffe666@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Do you have to have played the witness to get the jokes, or does it stand alone?

[–] addie@feddit.uk 4 points 2 years ago

It would still be a fun little puzzler, but it's very much a single-note satire, and a lot of it would come off as "lol random" rather than taking the piss out of The Witness. Which is also brilliant, love them both.

[–] RudeGryphon@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

I've never played it. So I'd say no. I still thought it was great.

[–] HughJanus@lemmy.ml 26 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (6 children)

I pretty much just assume "Free To Play" games are full of microtransactions, is that wrong?

E: to be clear, I don't think microtransactions are an inherently bad thing. In fact, if people want to make games where other people with more money front the costs of development, I'm all about it.

What I hate is being reminded every 5 minutes that it has garbage skins that I can pay IRL money for.

[–] Lev_Astov@lemmy.world 15 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Yes, there are good games that are just totally free. I've enjoyed the hell out of both ΔV: Rings of Saturn and South Scrimshaw lately. Both offer things you can purchase, but you get the full experience without them.

[–] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Also there are several really good open source games which are obviously microtransaction free. OpenTTD from this list is an example and Osu!lazer and SuperTuxKart also come to mind

F2P with microtransactions isn't inherently bad. Legends of Runeterra is that way and is maybe the best-done F2P model I've ever seen.

[–] SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I wouldn't put Path of Exile in that bucket. The cosmetics and stash upgrades are there but they don't push at all.

[–] Acid2688@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

They're all way too expensive though. I'd have bought way more if they were lower and enjoyed the game more for it.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I know Holocure isn't, but my gut reaction to F2P is to steer clear.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 2 points 2 years ago

I have like 1000 hours in Warframe and only spent like 20$ on it. Even that wasn't really necessarily. You can farm shit and easily make enough of the in game money for what you need selling it to other players.

[–] ago@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

True, but there is nothing wrong with that really unless it's a multiplayer game where you get unfair advantages. It's hard to expect a f2p game to not have micro transactions.

[–] HughJanus@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago (3 children)
[–] Skyrkazm@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Grimm's Hollow. It's free and has 0 micro transactions. Enioy my friend:]

This is your hourly reminder that mineclone2 exist.

thanks - to save other cheapskates' time - these are supported on Linux: Handshakes, OpenTTD, Cave Crawler

[–] RegularJoeJoe@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 years ago

Much appreciated!

[–] sebinspace@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago

OpenTTD is just fucken.. -chef’s kiss-

[–] mesamunefire@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

Wesnoth is pretty fun too.

[–] Landsharkgun@midwest.social 10 points 2 years ago

I'll add Endless Sky in there as well. It's an open-source spiritual successor to EV Nova.

[–] mihnt@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago

Mushroom Cats is another one. My daughter loves it. Good way to kill 15 minutes.
