Bought a Slimbook Laptop because Apple's repair would take too long. Slimbook is a Spanish company. We generally buy laptops from smaller suppliers at our company since.

We have been running on European providers for our rented servers for over a decade and are happy there too.

Gmail โ€”> ProtonMail.

Google drive and iCloud โ€”> PCloud, ProtonDrive, Kooft (still have to drop one or 2).

Google translateโ€”> DeepL.

Uber โ€”> Bolt.

Windows โ€”> Linux (although still mostly using windows b/c company laptop).

Google maps โ€”> Mapy, although still sometimes using google for street view.

Edge, Chrome โ€”> Vivaldi, Ecosia.

Google search โ€”> Ecosia.

ChatGPT โ€”> LeChat (Mistral), although still sometimes use ChatGPT.

WhatsApp โ€”> Signal (open source, although still American) and Threema.

I'd also recommend these - and always use a paid VPN!:

Mail: ProtonMail, Mailbox

Cloud storage: Peergos (self-hosted),

Translate: DeepL

Taxi: just use public transit, or Bolt

Software: Linux

Phone: Fairphone (Google Pixel is claimed to be safer for privacy, but I still don't trust Google)

Maps: OsmAnd or OpenStreetMaps

Browser: Firefox, Librefox (or the usual onion, if censorship is that bad)

Search: Ecosia, Qwant, SearXNG (if you know how to self-host)

AI Chat: Kobold.cpp or Ollama (latter downloads models automatically, but former is better elsewhere)

Messaging: Signal, Threema, Wire

Qobuz (music streaming) is pretty sweet thus far.

[โ€“] kurcatovium@piefed.social 2 points 15 hours ago

I don't get their business model. They're not even available in half of Europe...

I have also switched to them from Apple Music, I just wish their selection was bigger.

FYI: In the mobile app there is link in the settings to a form where you can report missing albums.

I havenโ€™t gotten around to using this feature yet, but I think itโ€™s awesome that it exists.

I also hope that theyโ€™ll be able to grow their catalogue, but I must point out that I donโ€™t find it to be poor - I just wish it was even bigger.

They also have other areas where I hope they improve, like catalogue organisation and even better discovery (or Discover tab), but over all I like them very much and I have faith theyโ€™ll become even better (with a bigger user base).

They also have their own standout features. I.e Iโ€™ve always wanted playlist search that searches artist AND song title AND album - Qobuz has that.

Ditched Cloudflare and am now running Pangolin on a VPS at Infomaniak in Switzerland for all my tunnels and reverse proxies.

[โ€“] oliver@lemmy.pifferi.io 3 points 14 hours ago

Did the same after discovering Pangolin. What a great tool! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Nextcloud has been a pretty good switch but it is getting unwieldy and a swiss knife with a million tools. Run my own email server switched from gmail, but it is a pita VPS server is contabo - not the best but pretty cheap and is European - never really looked into how european they are though and they have US datacenters

I got the wow private server Warmane (Western European hosted) client setup on Nobara so when my current wow sub ends no more cash is heading to Blizzard in getting my original wow trilogy fix. Turtle Wow also covers the season of discovery itch.
