I might have asked this before over at lemm.ee, but I figured I could make a post so there is not just one person carrying the burden.

I really enjoyed Emerald back in the day. It had so many small QoL improvements and I enjoyed the story too.

More recently, and I understand this is an unpopular opinion, i really like Violet. I greatly enjoy the tera raids, and I liked the attempt at allowing you to play the game in the order in which you wanted. That was not done great, but it did allow some choice. The DLCs have been fun too.

I enjoy the shit out of gen 9 as well, but believe it or not - mainly for the story lol. Ogrepon is cute af as well.

I mean, it’s only an unpopular opinion amongst a very annoying, chronically online group of losers who are never happy about anything. ScarVi is the second-best selling game after R/B/G. It’s an objectively popular game.

And you’re exactly right! Those DLCs were fun as hell! How could you not love Ogrepon?

I think I have to give it to Heart Gold, though it's not an easy choice. Those remakes just really captured the spirit of the original but with all of the improvements to the format that has been made since. It's a fantastic game to replay.

In fact, my oldest kid and I are making our way through Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee right now, and after we finish we'll be moving to Heart Gold and Soul Silver. I'm really excited to walk through every generation with him, but that duo is the one I'm looking forward to most.

maybe I'm dumb but what do you mean by "those teenagers"?

Ugh. Typo - was supposed to be "remakes" but I wasn't awake enough to proofread

The Johto games have always been my favorites. Crystal in particular is really important to me. As a child I had been bullied (by other children, not adults, but the adults didn't exactly do anything to stop it) for not conforming to gender roles. While Pokémon in particular had a universal appeal, the toys were still in the boys' section at the store and I was always paranoid that someone would see me and the bullying would start again. Being able to play as a girl in Crystal was a revelation. It made me feel like I could be myself regardless of what other people thought.

Yellow. Played that shit into the ground back in the day. All the BS grinding they added after that, with rares and special hidden ability values, really made it overwhelming and killed it for me.

Scarlet/Violet, especially now on the Switch 2. It's a shame it didn't release with this performance, but it makes a huge impact on overall enjoyment. Not having random encounters is the way.

Probably HGSS . (Spritework's immaculate|walking pokemon had so much personality that hasn't been replicated since) !

XY. It was the generation responsible for getting me and my (now) wife back into Pokémon. Loved the hyper training. Feels like it was the first time the underlying mechanics of the game were revealed to the player in a meaningful and deliberate way.
