It appears that the mysterious dodecahedron of roman west europe has been solved - it makes chainmail. But what were the carved balls for?

I saw something similar once, which was apparently used for knitting.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised by knitting/sewing/clothes making in some form either. Just a way to spool your wool?

I guess I was actually thinking of the same Roman Dodecahedron you mention, but I've heard of a different use for them.

Definitely a hard ball. And not sure how well it would connect being carved
